Kankyuan was founded in 1965 with the aim to contribute to the advancement of Japanese culture by making this tradition available to the public through preserving and cultivating the tea ceremony teachings that have been handed down to Mushakouji Senke from Sen Rikyu.

- The preservation and opening of Kankyuan and other structures for public use
- Exhibiting and opening tea gatherings, classes, etc. to the public
- The publication and distribution of books on tea ceremony culture
- Other activities for achieving the goals of this institute
- First tea ceremony of the New Year (Kyoto Headquarters and Tokyo Branch in January)
- Giving tea offerings, tea ceremonies at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples (various locations)
- Buddhist memorial service and tea ceremony held on the anniversaries of Rikyu’s and Ichio’s passing (Kyoto)
- Summer courses and workshops (Kyoto, Tokyo, Osaka, Takamatsu, Matsue)
